Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of Ava DuVernay took place on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. Her aunt Denise encouraged her passion for the arts and her creative side. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, allowed her to pursue art literature and the theater during daylight hours. The aunt introduced DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and earned qualifications in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay was in college when she started to get fascinated by the production aspect of television journalism. DuVernay began her career working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was told to take a look at the junk of a jury member's home. Her work left her dissatisfied in journalism, so she decided to move towards the industry of public relations. DuVernay began her first position as a publicist at small production studios right out of high school. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. The agency was the first to launch a variety of promotional and lifestyle networks which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
